Sporting News Wire Sevice

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- Carl Edwards wrote the next chapter in the resurgence of Roush Fenway Racing in indelible ink -- not just by winning the pole for Sunday's Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips at The Glen but by blowing away the rest of the NASCAR Sprint Cup field in the process.

Edwards sped around the 2.45-mile road course at Watkins Glen International in 70.882 seconds (124.432 mph), just .084 seconds off Jeff Gordon's 2003 track record. Jamie McMurray was second in Saturday's qualifying session at 123.814 mph, followed by his Earnhardt Ganassi Racing teammate, Juan Montoya, at 123.699 mph.
