The final practice at Bristol was only 45 minutes and most of the teams used the entire segment exclusively in qualifying trim. Ryan Newman had the fastest lap at 121.190 mph followed by Carl Edwards, David Gilliland, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon.
Two drivers who stood out that were running race set-up as well was Matt Kenseth and Jamie McMurray. Kenseth was sixth fastest overall, but ran a total of 51 laps compared to the likes of Jeff Gordon who only ran seven. McMurray was seventh fastest while running a total of 44 laps.
The surprise of the day continues to be Gilliland who followed up his great first practice session where he was fastest with a great final session. Gilliland needs to qualify on time to make the race, but he looks to have the possibility of pole-sitting just because he will be one of the last drivers to make a qualifying attempt when the track figures to be much cooler.
Another surprise, but in a negative way, is Kevin Harvick's awful day of practices. During the first session, Harvick was 39th fastest and while he did get better during happy hour, 29th fastest still isn’t acceptable for that team.
